FOCUS ON GUATEMALA I - January 10 - 17 2009

Another NEW field trip will take us to Guatemala in January 2009. Escape the winter blues and join us on a trip and renew your photographic creativity.

Located in Central America and having both Atlantic and Pacific coastlines, Guatemala is bordered by Mexico to the northwest, Belize to the northeast, Honduras and El Salvador to the southeast. Since becoming a democratic nation in 1996, the country has seen positive development and economic growth while remaining true to its traditional Mayan roots.

Crystal clear lakes surrounded by some of the world’s highest volcanoes punctuate Guatemala’s landscape, which also includes impressive Mayan ruins, and abundant wildlife that inhabit a pristine jungle environment.

Fortunately, although Guatemala hosts an abundance of biologically significant and unique ecosystems, its designation as a biodiversity hotspot has not yet attracted the attention of mainstream tourism.

This tour undoubtedly offers a unique opportunity to experience a relatively undiscovered region of the world, bathe in Mayan culture, and explore every aspect of photographic creativity – and then some!

Our hotel for the week is close to the town of Panajachel, on the shores of Lake Atitlan – described by author Aldous Huxley as the most beautiful lake in the world.

The tour will include a trip to Antigua, the colonial capital city of Guatemala – a walker’s paradise with its maze of cobblestone streets, open-air cafés, gardens, and restored Spanish mansions, as well as visits to local markets, including the largest in Guatemala at Chichicastenanga that dates back to pre-Hispanic times.

This trip is an odyssey for nature and wildlife, landscapes and people photography.
