| Derek started taking photos, in Britain, in the early sixties when his parents bought him a Kodak Brownie camera. In those days he took mostly black and white prints. In the early seventies he joined the Windsor Camera Club in Windsor, Ontario and honed his skills as a black and white print maker, creating his first darkroom in a closet! He also started to shoot colour slides. He soon realized that he wanted to specialize in landscape and nature shots.
Derek has won numerous trophies and awards in Ontario and Michigan. In the year 2000, Derek opted for “Freedom 55” by taking an early retirement, and he and his family moved to Vancouver Island the following year, settling in the Comox Valley. He treated himself to a digital camera for his 60th birthday and is now a convert! Derek now sells his work at Backdoor Gallery on Duncan Avenue in Courtenay and is represented by a stock agency Alamy.
He finds that living in ‘Paradise’ gives him ample opportunity to take scenic shots, and he also manages to add to his portfolio by travelling. It is obvious from Derek’s work that he waits for the perfect light, and his motto is “Without the light – don’t bother!”
