Join one of the world's leading equestrian photographer's Peter Llewellyn, in a full day of horse photography instruction.

Peter has photographed almost every major equestrian event in the world, including Olympic Games, and The World Equestrian Games. His work appears regularly in equestrian magazines worldwide and is used in advertising, calendars books, PR Companies and event sponsors.

Each workshop will comprise one full day of instruction commencing at 9:00 a.m., working through until around 4:00 p.m., although Peter afterwards remains available to answer individual questions.

Workshop begins with a slide show of equestrian images – illustrating the diversity of disciplines and how sports photography has changed since its earliest days. Some of the material is historically unique, from the HorseSource database, encompassing 19 Olympic Games and providing one of the largest archives of equestrian photography in the world.

During the slide show Peter will address the good and bad points of each photo, the equipment used, lighting, the position of the photographer in relation to the horse, and the camera settings used. This segment of the workshop will conclude with advice for optimizing the menu settings and capabilities of today’s digital cameras to ensure the highest quality image output. This will apply to those participants using high-end digital SLRs as well as good digital point-and-shoot cameras.

Progressing to practical photography, participants will begin with horse portraits, including preparation of the subject, what handlers should and shouldn’t do, standing a horse for stallion-type images, lighting, backgrounds, camera position, etc.

Following a lunch break, the afternoon will be devoted to action photography, including dressage, jumping and horses at liberty. Thereafter, one further classroom session when images will be downloaded from selected students, allowing the class to critique the work using the lessons learned during the day and, finally, an open question and answer period

Places on theworkshops is limited so it’s recommended that you make a reservation as quickly as possible to avoid disappointment. If this date is notconvenient, please e-mail an expression of interest for notification when further workshops have been arranged.

Quotes from previous Thunderbird Workshops:

"Thanks to you and Darren for a wonderful day. I appreciate your patience, sense of humor and enthusiasm to work with me after the class was over. I wish I'd had time to buy you both a beer." Elke T.

PETER LLEWELLYN'S PERSONAL BIO:

I have been a professional photographer for over 25 years, starting as a sports photographer for the UK national newspapers, most notably the Daily Telegraph and The Times. Since the eighties I have specialized in equestrian photography and have covered almost every major event in the world including Olympic Games, World and European Championships, as well as dressage, show jumping, eventing and driving cmpetitions too numerous to name. I was the official photographer for the 1998 World Equestrian Games in Rome, the official FEI photographer for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and have been the official photographer for many other top events around the world, including Spruce Meadows in Canada.

In addition to my equestrian work I also run a successful wildlife and nature photography company, Peter Llewellyn (www.peterllewellyn.com) which also offers a range of photographic workshops, including field trips to places such as the Pantanal in Brazil (with a one-week option to photograph some of the world’s best Lusitano horses in and around Sao Paulo), the Okavango Delta in Botswana, Yelapa in Mexico and, closer to home in North America, areas such as Banff National Park and the Florida Everglades. Full details of these can be found on the Peter Llewellyn web site.
